Deep within the La Roche-Cotard cave in western France, archaeologists have discovered strange lines and patterns carved into the rock tens of thousands of years ago. These mysterious engravings may change our understanding of the origins of art. It’s possible that it was the Neanderthals, not modern humans, who first learned to turn stone into a means of self-expression.
